Bio:

Elly Heise is a first-generation Canadian artist with Norwegian-German parentage. She implements a wide range of methods in her practice, often experimenting with photographic interventions and her own physicality in relation to space. Heise attended the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver where she got her Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Photography. She obtained her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island. In 2020 she is preparing for numerous exhibitions in Western Canada and residencies in Europe.

Artist Statement:

In my artistic practice I explore the nature of people’s relationship to spaces through recording, archive, and memory. Using the photographic medium, I investigate our innate desire to inhabit imagined space and how this desire potentially impacts our relationships with memory and physicality. I experiment with various digital and physical processes, often physically staging an image and manipulating it later using post-processing software. There is an increasing dependency on technology to record, store, and act in place of our own perceptions and capabilities. I hope that my artwork will help viewers consider a more innate relationship with memory and spaces.
